Verbal Ink is a very reputable, respected company that I’ve actually written about before. They are best known for hiring home-based workers for transcription, but they also hire people to work from home doing translation. If you have native-level fluency in English and another language and you are US-based, freelance translation for Verbal Ink may be a viable option for you to earn money at home. They use freelancers for both audio and document translation.
I always dig around to find out what I can regarding pay rates for various home-based positions, but the rate is not readily available online. However, a job posting on Craigslist for the translator position at Verbal Ink states that the rate is “competitive.”
Here are the language pairs that Verbal Ink is typically hiring translators for:
-Chinese (Simplified/Traditional)/English-Arabic/English-Portuguese/English-French/English-Russian/English-German/English-Italian/English-Korean/English-Danish/English-Persian/English-Vietnamese/English-Ukrainian/English-Hebrew/English-Norwegian/English-Swedish/EnglishTheir website lists some other languages on the translation services page.
Verbal Ink prefers if you’ve had at least three years of prior translation experience and you must be legally eligible to work in the US. Experience translating professional documents and materials will give you an edge over the competition. It’s also a plus if you’ve used CAT (computer assisted translation) tools like Trados and Swordfish.
I cannot find any feedback from current Verbal Ink translators anywhere online. However, I do know that overall this company has a great reputation both as a business and also with people who do transcription for them.
Verbal Ink almost always seems to be needing translators. Even if they aren’t, they claim to keep all resumes on file. You can apply by emailing your resume and cover letter to jobs (at) verbalink (dot) com. Your resume should be in Microsoft Word or PDF format. In the subject line, be sure to mention what languages you are interested in doing translation in. Good luck! Please comment below if you have any experience doing translation for Verbal Ink that you would like to share with everyone else.
There are several other companies that hire for work from home translation and interpretation! Check out the list in my directory here.
